Visual Cliff
A device for testing depth perception. It consists of two identically patterned horizontal surfaces, one well below the other; the upper is extended over the lower by means of a sheet of transparent glass.
A subject (usually a newborn of a species) placed in the centre of the upper surface and who is unwilling to move onto the transparent glass that projects over the lower surface is assumed to possess depth perception. Many species have been found to possess depth perception at birth, indicating an innate sense, unaffected by learning experience.Want to thank TFD for its existence?, add a link to this page, or visit.Link to this page: visual cliff.

The visual cliff consists is a glass-topped table intended to create the impression of an abrupt drop-off. In their seminal work conducted in 1960, Eleanor Gibson and Richard Walk found that while depth perception seems to come about shortly after birth, fear and avoidance of the perceived threat increases with age.
The visual cliff apparatus was used to investigate depth perception in 5 strains of mice. Positive responses indicative of visual depth discrimination were obtained in 4 strains (A/J:SM/J:C57BL:6J/C57BL/10J); the fifth strain (C3H/HeJ), with retinal degeneration, gave almost equal negative and positive reactions and showed no avoidance of the visual cliff or side preference.
Depth perception was therefore absent in this strain. No significant differences between strains with pigmented and non-pigmented retinas were obtained with the apparatus and techniques employed. Previous article in issue. Next article in issue.
