The progression goes Ska-Rocksteady-Reggae-Dub-Dancehall. Rocksteady was made from less jazzy musicians getting into music and recreating the soul sound in american but with a Jamaican twist. Get this first. As dank as it gets.​​For deep and dark, look for the Dub Massive compilations put together by Bill Laswell, they are great comps, I particularly like Chapter Two. The disc will set you back a ton, but you stream it or get it from bandcamp.

I also like Laswell's own stuff, which is less explicitly reggae, but often has tablas and other beats. Check Radioaxiom: A Dub Transmission. He also does some ambient stuff that can be good.​Many people swear by Adrian Sherwood and his On-U Sound productions. I am not as much of a fan but given that he's still going and crosses into more modern sounds, he is worth checking out.

British White dude. Also, I like Dennis Bovell, esp his work with Linton Kwesi Johnson on LKJ in Dub. This stuff is closer to the roots and with a little less effects, but I like it a lot (cause I also like LKJ).
